Synthetic marijuana, known as K2, Spice, or potpourri, is a dangerous drug that is made from man-made chemicals that mimic the active ingredient in marijuana. Typically used by smoking, inhaling, or injecting the substance, K2 can cause a number of adverse effects even after one use. With a high that can last up to a few hours, users report feeling relaxed and detached from surroundings while having an elevated mood. K2 also alters the perceptions of the world around, an effect that can bring about unpleasant episodes of psychosis.
Because K2 is a relatively new drug, there is little known about the long-term effects of using synthetic marijuana. However, what is known is that hospital emergency rooms are seeing a drastic increase in people requiring immediate medical attention shortly after using synthetic marijuana. Originally marketed as a safe alternative to marijuana, K2 is proving to be a dangerous drug that can lead to fatal consequences.
With the proper rehab, detox, and therapeutic interventions, synthetic marijuana addiction can be a curable disease. Individuals have the ability to overcome an addiction to synthetic marijuana and go on to live a happy, fulfilled, and sober life.
Why Seek Rehab for Synthetic Marijuana Abuse at Acadiana Addiction Center
K2 abuse and addiction can be a grave matter. The longer the abuse of K2 goes untreated the higher the chances are for the development of serious negative effects. Individuals who abuse synthetic marijuana can grow to develop a tolerance to the drug, requiring more and more of it to achieve the same high. Eventually, an addict is no longer able to function on a daily basis, as all they care about is where they are going to get their next high. As the usage of K2 increases, so do the risks for negative health consequences, which can result in damage to the brain, coma, and sudden death.

Program Philosophy and Benefits
Our mission at Acadiana Addiction Center is to provide an excellent care to every patient who comes to us for help for their addiction problems, such as synthetic marijuana abuse. We strive to provide the knowledge and skills needed to remain living a life free from chemical dependence. At our treatment center, we firmly believe that you have the strength inside you to overcome your addiction problems and to stop living a life complicated with drug abuse. Having a substance abuse problem does not mean that you are a bad or crazy person, it just means that you are going through a troubling time and need help. Addiction does not have to define who you are or who you will become, you have the power to make your life what you want it to be.
The staff at Acadiana makes the necessary effort to provide an environment with unconditional support, one in which individuals can restore a sense of dignity and respect. The programs within our rehab are designed to take into account every aspect of an individual, through getting to know you on a personal level. We take the time to work with the whole person, including their family, personality, life experiences, and cultural aspects. We offer recovery that heals the mind, body, and soul.
Acadiana Addiction Center provides individuals who need help with addiction problems, with a full range of effective treatment options. When someone comes to our facility they will first undergo a full assessment that will determine their treatment needs and help to establish which stage of addiction they are currently in. Some of the programs and services we offer include individual therapy, group therapy, detoxification, residential treatment, and outpatient therapy. An intake counselor will help you decide which program is more suited to your personal needs.
Detoxification is the first stop for individuals who have become physically and psychologically dependent on a substance, such as K2. This program is medically monitored 24 hours a day and is designed to ensure safe and comfortable withdrawal from all toxic substances. Only when an individual is completely detoxed can they begin the next stage of addiction treatment.
The Residential Treatment program is for patients who have completed the detox process and are ready to begin the therapeutic stage of treatment. Patients in this program will still be under 24-hour supervision in order to ensure the safety of everyone at the center. This program will work to maintain stabilization through providing knowledge about addiction, the tools necessary to cope with life stressors, and the ability to identify relapse triggers. Patients are encouraged to take an active approach to their recovery and will be involved in the whole treatment process.
Extended Residential Treatment programs are available for all patients who have previously completed primary care and are stable enough to continue on with their recovery. For these programs, female patients are sent to Belle of the Oaks center, while male patients will complete treatment at Acadiana. Both male and female programs are 3 months consisting of 3 different phases. Each phase is dedicated to specific skills and knowledge needed to continue to be successful with a lifelong goal of sobriety.
Some of the therapeutic techniques we use in each program at our rehab center may include:
Individual therapy – Individual sessions are held at least once a week and are used to give clients one-on-one time with a therapist. Sessions are used to monitor patient progress in the recovery process as well as to address any additional issues that may not have come up in a group.
Cognitive-behavioral therapy – Used in order to help patients recognize problem thinking and negative thought patterns. This therapy helps to identify certain problems in their ability to manage emotions and how to display an appropriate amount of assertiveness.
Rational-emotive Behavioral therapy (REBT) – Makes individuals identify their negative beliefs and change them into more positive ways of thinking. By changing thought patterns, individuals are more able to change behavioral patterns.
Motivation interviewing – A technique primarily used to get individuals motivated so that they want to make changes for the better. This type of therapy helps patients to visualize the future and helps them set goals for how they would like their future to be.
Group Therapy – Group therapy creates a safe environment where patients are able to work together to overcome addiction. Through education and process based groups individuals will begin to bound and create a healthy community in which maintaining sobriety is the main goal. In order to promote group cohesiveness patients will be asked to write autobiographies of themselves that they will share with the group.
Family therapy – Family therapy brings to the forefront any issues about the individual’s addiction that may not have been addressed before. Family members are encouraged to share their own feelings and struggles. Boundaries for the addiction and recovery process will be set in an attempt to avoid further confrontation.
Family workshop – This is a 3-day intensive workshop that works with patients and their families educating them about addiction and how the recovery process will work. We want to help create an atmosphere where family members feel comfortable discussing issues related to the addiction with each other.
At Acadiana, we offer a variety of experiential programs that you will have an opportunity to be involved in. Some of them include:
- Recreational therapy
- A.A. and N.A. meetings
- Art therapy
- Spiritual counseling
- Vocational planning
Continuing Care – What comes next?
Upon completion of Acadiana Addiction Center’s Residential Treatment programs, patients will begin the aftercare plan process that was set into motion upon arrival to the facility. Aftercare plans will be made up of your personal recovery goals and additional recommendations from the treatment staff. The main goal of establishing a discharge plan is to provide individuals the opportunity to strengthen skills learned in treatment to increase chances for more successful recovery. There are many different aftercare programs available offering services to fit the needs of all individuals.
The Partial Hospitalization Program provides complete comprehensive treatment for each patient. Offering individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, and a wide range of experiential methods. For those enrolled in the partial hospitalization program lodging will be provided, allowing for a more secluded healing environment. Intensive outpatient therapy is also provided at Acadiana for those that do not need much supervision during the day. Sessions in this program are held in the evenings and consist of a total of 10 hours for up to five weeks. Individual counselors will be assigned to each patient and will monitor individual progress.
If you feel that you are ready to return home and integrate back into your community then we will provide you with the necessary resources. We will suggest outpatient therapy services where you can find the support needed to maintain sobriety.
