Xanax, the brand name for a drug known as “alprazolam” is a relatively short-acting prescription anxiolytic of the benzodiazepine class of medication that is available via prescription only. Many individuals are prescribed Xanax for up to four weeks at a time in order to help manage anxiety symptoms and disorders. While most people who take Xanax do so according to the specific instructions of their physician and complete the course of treatment without problems, certain individuals may come to depend upon the feelings of relaxation provided by this benzo. Over long periods of use, Xanax can be physically and psychologically addictive.

Similar to other benzodiazepines, alprazolam, a Schedule IV controlled substance, binds to GABA sites in the brain and enhances the effects of GABA, a naturally occurring chemical in the brain, thereby reducing the stimulating activity of the brain. This produces a feeling of calm among those struggling with anxiety. Benzodiazepines such as Xanax are commonly abused; and according to the DEA, alprazolam is the most commonly abused drug in this class.

Many individuals who develop an addiction to Xanax use the drug for nonmedical purposes. Rather than attempting to quell anxiety, they instead use the drug to enhance the high provided by another downer, such as opiate narcotics or alcohol. Usage of these substances together can create major health-related concerns as all “downers” are respiratory depressants. Combined, they can cause significant respiratory depression that can lead to overdose, coma, and death. Others will use Xanax to reduce the unpleasant side effects of stimulant abuse, such as anxiety and jitteriness. The combination of uppers and downers can easily lead to cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack or stroke.

Addiction to Xanax and other benzos is a very dire addiction that cannot be successfully managed at home. Individuals who are addicted to benzos need medically-monitored detox and rehab in order to recover from this addiction safely and effectively. At Acadiana Addiction Center, we’re ready to help you break your addiction to Xanax and recover to lead a happy, normal, and sober life.

Therapies

Learn About the Treatment Approaches We Use for Xanax Abuse at Acadiana

Acadiana Addiction Center offers a variety of rehab programs specifically designed to help individuals overcome chemical dependency. Our effective detoxification, residential, and outpatient therapy programs ensure patients get the treatment that works best for them. The treatment process begins with a complete assessment, provided free of charge. The results of the assessment will help our staff determine which program will work best for you.

Detoxification is used to gradually detox individuals who have become physically dependent on a substance. This is a 24-hour medically monitored program where patients will safely and comfortably go through withdrawal. Once detox has been completed, the therapeutic phase of treatment can begin.

The Residential Treatment program is for patients who have completed any necessary detox and are stable enough to fully engage in the therapeutic process. The focus of residential treatment is to work on emotional stabilization, development of skills necessary to allow patients to take an active approach in their recovery, and to provide a wealth of knowledge about the disease of addiction.

Extended Residential Treatment programs are an option for those individuals who have already completed primary care. This program build off of the knowledge obtained from the primary care program helping patients expand on those skills in order to ensure a more successful recovery. Residents are enrolled in this program for a minimum of three months and will complete three different phases of treatment, each one reinforcing different skills needed for a successful recovery.

Individual Therapy – Each individual in our programs is guaranteed at least one individual session per week. However, we do understand that many patients have many concerns that they would like to work through one-on-one with a therapist so we try to provide 2 to 3 sessions per week. We will work with specific patient needs to make sure they get the attention they need.

Group Therapy – Group therapy is a very effective method used in the treatment of addiction because it brings together individuals who are in need of support and understanding. Together they can work through problems they face with addiction and help each other toward a better future. We offer both psycho-educational and process based groups centered around many different addiction topics.

Family Therapy – Family members are included in the recovery process so that they can get a better understanding of your addiction disorder and learn how they can be most useful in you recovery. We also hold a 3 day family workshop to allow family members to share how addiction has affected them and to help them set boundaries for your recovery process.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – This approach helps patients recognize and change destructive thought patterns that lead to negative behavior and learn how to better respond to situations. When these thought patterns are corrected individuals are able to reduce the anxiety that often times leads to negative behavior, such as substance abuse.

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy –REBT focuses on changing irrational though patterns while learning how to accept past situations and tolerate the associated strong emotions. REBT helps individuals learn to pay attention to the current situations and how to deal with them in a more appropriate manner.

Motivational Interviewing – This therapeutic method works to stimulate the desire and commitment to change. Counselors will work with patients to set goals and engage in behavior that will help them to achieve those goals.

In addition to traditional therapy modalities, we provide several different approaches to help you overcome your addiction. These options include:

  • Nutrition
  • Meditation
  • Acupuncture
  • Art Therapy
  • Spiritual counseling
  • Recreational programming
  • Vocational planning
  • A.A. and N.A.
